Words From Our Thriving Mothers

I attended Shelley's Birth Warrior Prenatal Yoga classes in my third pregnancy. I was diagnosed with postpartum depression after my second child and spent months in therapy that, while incredibly helpful, was also very expensive and overwhelming. After my first Birth Warrior session I was hooked. Shelley created a safe, calming place that allowed me to shed some layers of myself and be vulnerable and confront my insecurities as a mother. She helped me work through those feelings and emerge from the class radiating light and feeling so empowered. From artwork, chants, meditation and dancing, I loved how every week she provided some new way of helping us connect with ourselves, our babies and each other. Her exercises allowed us to take comfort in each other; women were forming bonds with each other that they barely knew or had just met. When it came time for me to deliver my baby, I utilized all that I learned and practiced in her classes. I felt grounded and centered and empowered. I have had unmedicated, vaginal births with all of my children, but my last was by far my best birthing experience. Now, I am four months into my best postpartum experience, which is in large part due to Shelley's therapeutic Birth Warrior Prenatal Yoga class. Shelley's wisdom and encouragement proved invaluable to me and my family and I am forever grateful.

Shelley is a grounded, wise, trained, caring, professional. Strong woman guiding us into motherhood. Each week has a different theme that is actually useful for birth and postpartum, the things I have never learned during previous pregnancies that I wish I had. Shelley really listens to everyone’s thoughts and makes sure we all feel included and heard. It is because of this class, and Shelley, that I feel confident and eager to birth my baby unmedicated, however, there are plenty of moms in the class who have different plans and wishes, and they are all welcomed and supported. We’ve all learned new things and can all leave the class confident and empowered to grow into our new selves, comfortable that we’ve become part of this sisterhood, and eager to return for postpartum yoga or birth story processing!

Thank you for all of your support, encouragement and care during my pregnancy. You helped me to believe that I can give birth naturally. Most of all, you helped me believe in myself and to trust my body's wisdom. What would I have done without you?
Michelle
Shelley pours her heart into each class, preparing a unique “intention” message, where we are learning things along the way. Shelley gives a lot of love, and genuine care to the mamas. I feel tremendously better (mentally, physically) since going. This class has even brought me to a place where I feel closer, and more connected to our baby. It is nice to be around other pregnant ladies too. A wonderful yoga experience

The yoga asanas we practiced helped to keep my body strong during pregnancy and provided me with the stamina I needed for labor. Most of all, Shelley’s teachings, artwork, visualizations, and vocal toning techniques were all essential tools that helped me during labor, particularly during the last few hours. All of these teachings put together allowed me to ultimately have the natural, drug free childbirth experience I had hoped for.

Shelly is the best. I have been to many yoga instructors and she is by far the best one ever. She knows her stuff in depth. Each of her classes is like therapy. They all start with a great discussion and a yoga practice incorporating the topic and a lovely aromatherapy and reiki to end with. Workout , relaxation, discussion and knowledge all in a power packed hour or two. This was one of the best things about the 9 months of pregnancy. I can't say enough about how much this class helped me physically and emotionally to deal with childbirth and also motherhood. I met great mammas who are good friends to keep. Thanks Shelly!

I believe the yoga significantly contributed to how great I felt while pregnant and positively impacted my recovery time from delivery. You have a special gift to help make pregnant women feel beautiful and comfortable about their bodies, and you do a great job of reminding them to genuinely celebrate and honor this special time in their lives. Thanks again.

While I was pregnant I made it a point to attend Shelley's prenatal yoga classes every week. I loved her classes because it gave me lot of confidence along with a sense of well being and made me cherish my pregnancy. All the 'asanas' that we did in class took off most of the usual pregnancy pains and made me relax and connect with my baby. I used to look forward to hearing her assuring and comforting words especially during the 'savasana'. Thank you very much Shelley, for all your support and guidance during my pregnancy.

Shelley conveys a wonderfully positive energy that made me feel more serene and confident as the months passed. Regular practice helped me remain strong and tuned into my body throughout pregnancy. After our baby girl was born, I remember looking at her and thinking that I am a “Birth Warrior” just like Shelley taught us. I felt exhausted, but yes, childbirth was certainly empowering. Thank you Shelley from all three of us for helping us make our birth experience beautiful!
Anne
Shelley is warm, nurturing, and is a great support of all that is woman. She has wonderful energy. Her classes left me feeling relaxed, but empowered and confident. I used many of her breathing techniques, visualizations, and labor positions during my 48 hr labor. In the end I was successful in having my unmedicated birth. Shelley's prenatal yoga class definitely contributed to my success. Shelley is awesome.
Karin
Yoga with Shelley not only gave me the strength to pursue and achieve a beautiful birth experience, it made my journey into motherhood all the more beautiful. Thank you Shelley for helping me find the birth warrior within myself!

Prenatal yoga has helped me a lot. The strength with which I was pushing, my doctor was like, 'Were you doing aerobics throughout your pregnancy or what? From where did you get that strength?' I was like 'No, its prenatal yoga!' Even during my surgery the doctor said, 'Your uterus, ovaries, all look very good. That prenatal yoga has helped your muscles!'

So thanks to you for your yoga classes. I will always remember those. Your gentle massage during shavasana were soo relaxing and motherly. Your personality makes its very easy to connect with you. Even my husband felt the same way.

Prenatal yoga was an important part of my pregnancy well-being, and I also used a lot of things you had taught me during the labor. Apart from the breathing, vocalizing and relaxation I think it was good for me to learn how to be more aware of my body and my inner feelings, which helped trust my body's abilities and 'surrender'. So, thank you so much!
Ann
Shelley was a spiritual guide during my pregnancy and birth process. I took lessons from her class with me into my birth experience and it helped me connect with the emotional and deeply spiritual aspect of birth. The music she suggested for labor still evokes the trance-like state I was in for my labor. The acceptance and release i learned from her allowed me to experience the twists and turns of labor with grace. I still consider my birth to be one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It was magical.

Thank you for teaching me to 'Trust and Surrender'. Your yoga lessons inspire me, as you do! Thank you for helping me find my inner 'Birth Warrior'. I couldn't have done it without you!

Shelley is amazing!!! I love her prenatal yoga classes and attended them for all 4 of my pregnancies. I always felt so empowered. She is in touch with the spiritual side of birth and transformation to motherhood and offers a place to not only connect and relate with other pregnant women, but also connect with our partners through couples yoga. She offers a wealth of information from all of her experience as a doula. In Shelley’s classes, we are given permission to move freely, make noise, and recognize the birth warrior within. We are also free to be vulnerable and talk about fears, desires, and hopes. Not to mention enjoy a great workout. I used poses I practiced in class to help ease pregnancy discomforts and labor pains.

I have been so fortunate to have attended Shelley’s classes and deeply appreciate her wisdom and support.

I am expecting my first kid and I am so glad that I found Shelley as my prenatal yoga instructor during my journey. Shelley is not only a prenatal yoga instructor she is also a wise mentor. She is very knowledgeable and experienced in what she does, she always brings joy, calm and good thoughts to the class. As a first time mom, she corrected my old thoughts about laboring, she calmed me down, she made me more confident and strong on my journey. If you are looking for a strong support of your future families you should come to Shelley, a caring service provider, worth a lot.

I was lucky enough to work with Shelly throughout my pregnancy and during labor. Birth warrior yoga classes are more than physical practice, they also helped me to get prepared mentally for an unmedicated birth. These classes gave me strength, courage, breathing techniques and lots of fun with other mamas.

I had a 19.5 hour labor and I did it all naturally with no pain medications or epidural. I really credit that to your yoga class. I took each contraction one at a time and didn't think ahead. Once I started active labor I totally went into a trance like state just focusing on each contraction as they came. I did hit that gate where I thought there was no way I could do this anymore, but I immediately thought about how you said that would happen and to just power through it because we are able to do this. I think just remembering you saying that would happen helped me to just keep going. Fortunately it was only a matter of minutes before I hit ten centimeters and I was able to start pushing.

Anyways, I am super happy that I attended your yoga class and your 3 hour work shop. I had horrible back labor the whole time and Troy was able to use your methods we learned to help me get through the contractions.

Thank you again. I am really going to miss your yoga class. I really do feel like a birth warrior.

I started taking Shelley’s yoga classes almost halfway through my pregnancy, and they have been absolutely amazing in preparing me for birth both mentally and physically. It’s great being in a community of other soon-to-be moms that share similar values for their births.

Shelley offers an engaging, grounding prenatal yoga flow instruction, she also offers an intimate, safe space to feel like I am part of a tribe and fulfilling my journey through womanhood. When I found out I was pregnant with my third baby, I already knew I had a wonderful tribe I could count on to be there for me again.

Shelley’s prenatal yoga classes are calming, relaxing, informative and just fantastic. When I first started going to the classes I had only tried yoga once or twice. I was nervous about the positions and my capabilities (I have knee problems, scapula problems, not very flexible, etc.). Shelley really gets to know each of her students and if you have any physical limitations, she really works with you (even in the big classes) to make sure you have options for each pose. I also love the earthy-ness of the classes. Shelley has a wonderful way of connecting her students to her and each other. While I’m sad that I only have a few weeks left of prenatal yoga, I look forward to taking her mommy and me yoga when my little on arrives.

I started taking prenatal yoga at Jai Ma with Shelley and am certain it’s one of the best things I can do for myself mentally and physically right now. The classes are geared toward childbirth preparation, so the exercises are ones that you can use during labor and are completely safe for your baby. The mental workout is great, too! I feel very connected with my baby, but these classes provide real focus with around 30-45 minutes of talking/breathing techniques and a mental exercise, and then around 45 mins-1 hour of working out and movement….I leave the class feeling calm, energized, ina good mod, and feel great the rest of the day. When I get home I’m always excited to share what I learned with my husband.

Love, love, love Shelley!!! If it wasn’t for her and her prenatal wisdom…I don’t know what I would have done! I was an emotional wreck! Taking her class got me on the right track to become a birthing warrior!! Not to mention her workouts are great, and experiencing it first-hand will definitely help me in labor!

Shelley is absolutely wonderful! She balances a strong prenatal workout with inner beauty/strength and a focus on oneness. I started out as a total yoga newbie and Shelley was so easy to learn from during my entire birth warrior journey.

Attending Shelley’s prenatal yoga class regularly was the single best thing I did for myself. She has such a gift. Her classes made me strong and limber, equipped me with a ton of knowledge and enabled me to connect with other moms-to-be. She’s warm and friendly and incredibly talented.

My relationship with her has come full-circle. Post-baby I attended her power yoga class, then prenatal again during my second pregnancy and then mommy and me with the baby. She is hands down the best yoga teacher I’ve ever had.

Don’t even think twice about going. You will love it!!

I am so grateful for the strength, endurance, calm, and confidence that her yoga class gave me. I loved Shelley so much I came back for my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies! I look back on all my deliveries with wonder at the beauty and miracle they each were, knowing that Shelley was so influential in each one.

I had the pleasure of attending Shelley's prenatal classes at Jai Ma studio while I was expecting my first baby. Shelley is so full of positive energy, empathy and wonderful insights on motherhood and the birthing process that it rubs off on you too! She is a beautiful woman, has a nurturing maternal energy, is a compassionate teacher and an all round wonderful human being.

Deciding to take Prenatal Yoga with Shelley was one of the best decisions I made during my pregnancy. It has helped me manage my stress and be healthy mentally and physically. Shelley’s classes are about 1.5 hours long. Each class is based on a theme on various elements of pregnancy and the journey into motherhood. The first half hour is a discussion on the theme where all the moms-to-be are encouraged to share and express their feelings and experiences. I found this to be very therapeutic and healing. The rest of the class is prenatal yoga poses which are geared toward helping the mom in the birth preparation and pain coping. Shelley is very knowledgeable on the topic of childbirth preparation and is always very patient with my questions.

The best part about knowing Shelley is that she inspired me to be the best person I can for both myself and others. I can live life more freely knowing that I have faced one of my greatest fears and have grown by leaps and bound emotionally and spiritually. I recommend Shelley to all my pregnant friends and we are truly lucky to have such a positive, empowering person in our San Diego birthing community.

Shelley is absolutely great! I first went to Shelley’s prenatal yoga classes about four years ago, when I was pregnant with my first baby. Now I am pregnant with my second and I am back! Shelley’s classes will provide you with the physical stretching benefits of yoga, the mental strength to labor and birth your baby, the ability to manage the pain of labor, the techniques to breathe which will help you maintain calm during labor. She has a lot of prenatal advice one can rely on. Her classes also foster a sense of community, which can be an invaluable resource during pregnancy. Her childbirth classes are great too because the spouses get useful knowledge on how they can contribute during labor. I have recommend Shelley’s classes to many friends and all who have attended her classes have LOVED her!
Shelley is fantastic, and her classes truly embody the holistic experience of mind and body. The class helped my physical and mental agility, and made my pregnancy a very wholesome experience. I highly recommend prenatal yoga with Shelley, and I look forward to postnatal sessions with her, too!

Shelley’s classes are great! It’s hard to carve out any time for yourself when you work full-time and have a toddler to care for, but Shelley’s classes are worth it three times over! It’s that one hour a week where your crazy, whirlwind, hectic life comes to a rest and you get to feel, connect with yourself and the baby growing inside you.

Shelley is amazing, she is very genuine and truly cares about the ‘mamas.’ Each class has a theme and is not only focused on preparing for birth but the journey of pregnancy itself. I very much enjoyed the classes and when I think about my wonderful birth, I cannot help but contribute it to the wonderful classes I took with Shelley. If you are looking for a prenatal yoga class that is fun and the coach is very compassionate and understanding, then you should definitely try prenatal yoga with Shelley. You won’t regret it.
